Battle with uterine fibroid

Small lumps that grow in the uterus are termed as fibroids. Uterine fibroids are considered noncancerous growths. These fibroids are the most common tumors found in the female reproductive system. Fibroids could be as tiny as seedlings, but it could grow up to bulky masses that would enlarge the uterus.

Causes
Various factors cause fibroids, such as:
  • Hormones
  • Genetic changes
  • Extracellular matrix (ECM)
Symptoms
The few signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids include:
  • Backache
  • Pain in the legs
  • Pressure on the pelvic area
  • Pelvic pain
  • Frequent urination
  • Constipation
  • Difficult to empty the bladder
  • Heavy bleeding
  • A menstrual cycle lasting for more than a week
Myomectomy treatment

Myomectomy is one of the treatments used to remove uterine fibroids. In this procedure, doctors would remove only the fibroids and leaves the uterus intact. Usually, surgery is recommended when the fibroids are severe, and symptoms persist in getting worse.

Fibroids could lead to fertility issues, and some fibroids might cause cancer. Doctors would then recommend myomectomy for such issues. Before the surgery, doctors would shrink the fibroids with the help of a hormone. This helps to reduce the loss of blood that is helpful for anemic patients.

There are 3 methods in a myomectomy, and it depends on the size, location, and number of fibroids.

1.Laparotomy - this is the conventional surgery in which large incision will be made either horizontally or vertically on the abdominal wall to access the cavity and remove the fibroids.

2. Laparoscopy - this method is preferred when the fibroids are small. There will be one or more small incisions made to remove the fibroids. After visualizing the uterus, the fibroids are identified and removed. Laparoscopic myomectomy helps in faster recovery compared to the laparotomy method.

3. Hysteroscopy - this method helps to treat large fibroids but primarily preferred for small fibroids. Hysteroscopic myomectomy is preferred if the fibroid is protruding into the endometrial cavity and the fibroids which have not grown deep into the uterine wall. It involves inserting a light viewing tool into the uterus through the genitalia.

Myomectomy preserves the uterus. Hence, many women choose this procedure for removing the fibroids. At Mathurtva Fertility Hospital, doctors provide safe methods to remove the fibroids and helps patients to recover faster.

Who Can Opt For Frozen Embryo Transfers?

In the last few years, the fertility sector has yielded significant success. The new technology named FET or frozen embryo transfer has been a good alternative to the traditional IVF treatment and has proved to give better results. The success rate for FET is about 80%. The frozen embryo has lowered the risk of excessive bleeding during pregnancy to about 30%. It has been found that children born with the help of FET have good health and weight during the birth time. The process has reduced the rate of complication during pregnancy to a great extent.

Now the question lies who can opt for this procedure and when?

Reasons for opting frozen embryo

There are certain things you need to understand in this regards.
  • An IVF treatment can result in several embryos. Now, when the embryo is ready at the laboratory, it is safe to transfer only one or two embryos in the woman’s body. The rest embryos are kept frozen. In case, the embryo transfer doesn’t result in a successful pregnancy, the couple can use the remaining frozen embryos for further treatment. Obviously, you can go through a new IVF treatment, but using previously fertilized embryos is more affordable and gives better results.
  • Even after you achieved a successful pregnancy, you can surely use those remaining preserved embryones to give your child a new sibling. Rather than going through a new IVF Cycle it is better to use already fertilized embryos.

Why frozen embryos are better than fresh ones?

  • Frozen embryos have a more success rate than the fresh ones.
  • In case of frozen embryo, any genetic defect can be pre-examined. So the couple gets a chance to opt for the embryo that has more chances of growing into a healthy baby.
  • If a woman has ovarian hyperstimulation Syndrome, embryos can be kept frozen to use it later when the conditions get suitable.

Few things related to female infertility

Damaged Fallopian tube obstructs the sperm to meet the egg. Also at times it has been found that the uterus is not big enough or has structural deformities. So although the sperm meets the egg, finally uterus is not capable enough to hold the growing embryo.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is one such disease that is found in most women who are facing infertility. To deal with fallopian tube disorder IUI is the best option. In this process, the sperms are injected directly in the uterus to ensure proper fertilization.

Risk Factors Of Male Infertility

A child is the greatest blessing in life. To give birth to your own little one and watching every stage of its growth is indeed the most beautiful part of life. There are certain couples who aren't lucky enough to get a child, which is mainly due to infertility. In fact, almost 15 percent of couples are infertile. Infertility is the inability to conceive a child even after attempting for a year. Such a situation can be very much depressing and might spoil your zest for life.

Over a third of these cases comprises of male infertility. Male infertility occurs when the sperm does not function properly, or when the sperm count is very low. It can also occur at times when the sperm delivery or the mobility of the sperm is affected. Infertility was definitely a case with no hopes, several decades back. But now, we live in an era where undesirable conditions can be prevented and even cured. There are various treatments available to overcome infertility. Yet, it is always best to be aware of the risk factors of the condition so that you can fight it easier.

Risk Factors of Male Infertility

Age: The testosterone level in the blood shows a declination with age, in almost all men despite being healthy. This decline may start from the age of 30. After the age of 30, the testosterone level decreases by 1% every year. So the chances of infertility are more in a 35-year-old man than in a 25-year-old.

Smoking: Well, smoking is indeed injurious to health and even spoils your chances of having a lovely little baby! Smoking results in a decrease of the sperm motility and in the percentage of normal sperm cells.

Obesity: Obesity leads to a significant decline in the number of normal motile sperm. The semen quality of men who have excess fat in the suprapubic area and the thighs will be poor.

Consumption of Alcohol and caffeinated drinks: Such drinks affect the reproductive process in every level. Studies also show that men who have more than 3 cups of tea and coffee daily might succumb to infertility.

Scrotal temperature: The scrotal temperature can decide the semen quality. An increase in scrotal temperature will result in poor semen quality.  Avoid driving continuously for 2 hours or more in a stretch or wearing tight trousers. All these can lead to an increase in scrotal temperature.
